On Dec. 1, the unemployment insurance program covering 2 million Americans will end. If Congress fails to act before then to extend the program, these struggling Americans will be left with no income. Worse yet, over the next five months, the total could rise to nearly 6 million unemployed Americans, further slowing our recovering economy and, in turn, resulting in more job loss.
While time runs out for struggling Americans' unemployment insurance, Congress is considering extending tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. These cuts would limit the federal government's ability to provide much-needed support to states and funding for critical education, health and job-training programs, since they would increase the deficit by $700 billion over the next 10 years.
Write to your senators today. Tell them that we need to support struggling Americans who are out of work instead of extending an irresponsible tax cut for the wealthiest Americans.
